  1. Up to now I have referred to these utilities as simply the "arc utility"
  2. and the "un-arc utility". I have saved the actual name of the utility
  3. for last because there is more than 1 "arc" and/or "un-arc" utility.
  4. Each author has written the utility for the same purpose but each in
  5. their own way and sometimes the resulting arc files have been incompatible.

  7. The arc utilities (both arc and un-arc) which perform the fastest and are
  8. the most widespread are those of Phil Katz. His arc programs can easily
  9. be identified by the letters PK preceding the arc and unarc utility names,
  10. such as PKARC.EXE (creates the arc file), and PKXARC.EXE (extracts files
  11. from an arc file).

  13. I won't bother getting into the commands necessary to run each of the arc
  14. utilities. The commands are provided in the documentation and also appear
  15. automatically if the programs are executed with no other command line
  16. parameters.
